Everyone wants to give you the ultimate car maintenance checklist. Not us! Well, that’s not entirely true. We could give you the ultimate maintenance checklist, but we prefer starting with a basic checklist of the essential things you should look out for when servicing your car.
Who doesn’t want their car to always be in good shape?
Nobody wants an unpleasant surprise in the middle of an isolated road or when trying to make it to a business meeting. But unpleasant surprises are only avoidable with proper maintenance and servicing. Maintenance is a necessity, not a luxury. “Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken” doesn’t apply to cars!
What is a Car Service and What Should be on Your Maintenance Checklist?
A car service is a health check with routine maintenance to ensure all your vehicle’s systems are functioning as they should. Typically routine maintenance is done by qualified professionals and happens a few times a year – depending on how frequently you’re using your vehicle. It includes assessing everything from your engine’s fluid levels to the general wear and tear of your car.
There are three primary categories of car services, which are:
1. Interim Service
You can do an interim service every three months or 3,000 kilometers, whichever you reach first. Here’s a routine maintenance checklist for interim service:
- Engine oil
- Oil filter
- Windscreen washer
- Coolant
- Brake fluid
- Power steering fluid
- Visual check of brake pads for wear
- External lights, warning lights, and the horn
You should also do an interim service before you take your long-distance drive to the countryside.
2. Full Service
Full car service is more comprehensive than interim servicing. It’s recommended every six months or after 6,000 kilometers. In addition to the interim service checklist, full service also entails analyzing all the vital parts of the car along with the mechanical and safety systems to ensure everything is working properly.
We’ll also replace the parts that have reached a certain lifespan at this point.
3. Major Service
This service takes it a notch further than the full service and inspects every part and corner of the car to make sure there is nothing out of place. It’s usually done every two years or after clocking 12,000 kilometers.
You’ll also need to replace worn-out parts, wheel bearing and shock absorbers, radiator, tires, and coolant hose.
