Kenya is an attractive country with rich cultural landscapes, expansive views, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. If you need an escape from city chaos, numerous destinations offer breathtaking sceneries, a treasure trove of landscapes, and small towns that offer a glimpse into local life. If you’re looking to explore Kenya in 2024, here are five road trip destinations you can consider:

1. Lake Naivasha

If you’re looking to escape the city for just a day, Lake Naivasha is the perfect road trip destination. Just 95km from Nairobi, driving to Lake Naivasha takes less than two hours and gives you plenty of time to explore the lake’s deep blue waters and surrounding sceneries. Here are activities you can do during your trip to Lake Naivasha.

Car to drive: You don’t need an off-roader to drive to Lake Naivasha. An everyday car, such as an Auris, that can take the highway will handle the trip quite well.

2. Aberdare Ranges in Nyandarua

If you want to separate yourself from the crowd without missing out on the wildlife at the Nairobi National Park, then take a longer trip to the Aberdare Ranges in Nyandarua. You’ll get to drive through the iconic Thika Superhighway through to Nyeri and then to the Aberdares.

Some of the wildlife you can see at the Aberdare Ranges include the black rhino, buffalos, leopards, and elephants among others. The game-viewing experience is on another level. But that’s not all. You can also engage in other activities, including taking a picnic at the Queen’s Cave.

Car to drive: The Aberdare Ranges are quite challenging and therefore need an offroader. A 4WD SUV such as the Mitsubishi Outlander would make the cruise exciting.

3. Lake Magadi

If you’re looking for a place not so far from Nairobi, but don’t fancy Lake Naivasha, then Lake Magadi is a good option. It offers the ambience you need for a road trip, with great nyama choma joints along the way for your stopovers.

Take the road to Ngong, drive to Kiserian, and then proceed to Isinya. A few kilometres after Kiserian, acacia trees replace the settlements and the view becomes scenic. Get to Lake Magadi and it becomes better. The pinkish hue of the lake creates a very spectacular view. If you take your trip in the evening, the view of the sunset is very rewarding.

Car to drive: There are sections of the Kiserian – Isinya road that are rough and need a car that can take a few soft hits. Midsize SUVs such as the Subaru Forester can handle this trip with ease and flair.

4. Mount Suswa Conservancy

This hidden gem is situated along the Nairobi highway on your way to Narok. It is hardly crowded and ideal if you’re looking for a relaxing road trip. The area is also dominated by the Maasai tribe and you can buy curios and artefacts as a gift to yourself or a loved one.

Once you get into the conservancy, you’ll be rewarded with stunning nature views and flocks of birds.

Car to drive: This is another road trip destination that requires an SUV. If you have a proper offroader such as the Toyota Land Cruiser 80-Series, the better.

5. The Coastal Region

The coastal region is a very popular destination among Kenyans. What most people don’t realize is that it’s a fun road trip destination to explore. Driving all the way, enjoying views along the way, and if you’re lucky, you might encounter wildlife at Voi.

The distance is about 500 km from Nairobi, so prepare adequately for more than a day’s trip. You can take detours along the way to make the experience more enjoyable. Once you get to Mombasa, enjoy stunning views of the Indian Ocean and other tourist attractions in the area. You can also move to the south coast area of Diani and explore some more.

Car to drive: If you’ll be sticking to the highway, then an everyday car that can handle a long-distance drive will do. Whether you’re driving an Axela, VW Golf, or an Outlander, it really doesn’t matter.
